Malanka Celebrations in Krasnoyilsk

Malanka, a traditional holiday on the eve of St Basil’s day, or New Year’s Day according to the Julian calendar, is celebrated according to local traditions, mainly in villages in Bukovyna and Halychyna.

One of the most spectacular events takes place in Krasnoyilsk, a village near the border with Romania. Every year an unusual procession is watched by a large audience. For two days, all eyes are on the carnival. Locals dress up as animals and characters from folklore. While the design of the outfits and masks may vary, the main characters remain the same.

Though the name of the carnival originates from the female character Malanka, the procession only includes men. However, girls are allowed to play the characters of Queens and Gypsies during the main celebration, when they tour the houses of the village, accompanied by their ‘Bears’ on the morning of 13 January.

The Bears’ costumes are made from hay or straw that would have been harvested in the summer.
